When you look in the mirror, do you look the way you feel? The natural aging process creates a variety of changes to your face, including skin laxity and a difference in the texture of your skin. Have you thought that maybe cosmetic surgery could be the answer to revealing an age-defying and more youthful appearance?

A deep plane facelift is an advanced facelift technique that addresses the lower half of your face as well as your neck and targets the deep supporting layers of facial tissue. During a comprehensive consultation, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Namita Murthy will carefully examine your facial structure and listen carefully to your concerns to determine whether this procedure is right for you. Call Murthy Facial Plastic Surgery today to get started.

What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?

A deep plane facelift corrects the lower two-thirds of the face and neck by repositioning and vertically lifting the superficial muscular aponeurotic system as a unit with the overlying skin.  The superficial muscular aponeurotic system is the layer that connects your face and neck muscles to the skin. This plays a significant role in your facial expressions and the development of wrinkles and skin laxity.

The layer includes collagen, fat, muscle, and fiber which are all impacted by age and gravity. Dr. Murthy will choose from one of several variations of a facelift at our surgical center. The choice involves the degree of dissection and the potential results of restoring the tissue in your mid-face for a more youthful appearance. This surgery is more comprehensive than a mini facelift or SMAS facelift and while it requires a greater recovery time, the outcomes are also more pronounced.

The deep plane facelift typically addresses the neck area as well as the soft tissue of the face. In addition to smoothing the skin, it creates a defined jawline and reduces the other signs of aging that are often apparent in the lower two-thirds of the face such as jowls. It also results in a more natural appearance than just skin tightening alone would offer.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Deep Plane Facelift?

A good candidate for a full Annapolis, MD deep plane facelift has cosmetic concerns along the lower two-thirds of the face. This includes:

  • Jowls
  • Laugh lines
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Sagging in the mid-portion of the face
  • Loose skin and fat beneath the chin

Since this is a significant surgery, an ideal candidate is typically healthy and a non-smoker. It is crucial that you either stop smoking completely or stop smoking for at least four to six weeks before the surgery and for six weeks after the surgery.

The best way to determine whether any procedure is the right fit for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Murthy. During this visit, she will review your medical history and aesthetic goals to help customize a treatment plan that best suits your needs.

What to Expect During and After Your Procedure

Dr. Murthy typically places an incision along the temples that curves and extends behind the ears and is hidden within the hairline. She will then lift and reposition the muscle and tissue and remove any excess skin before tightening the remaining skin for a more youthful appearance.

After surgery, we will give you detailed instructions on how to take care of your incisions, when to come in for a follow-up appointment, and how to ensure a smooth recovery. Our mission is to provide you with the best concierge care possible, which includes car service and overnight care. Additionally, Dr. Murthy is available to respond to your questions at any time with the use of a messaging system.

A deep plane facelift in Annapolis is less invasive than a traditional facelift surgery, which means your recovery time will generally be shorter. After the procedure, your face will be swollen and bruised but this goes down significantly over the first two weeks. You must limit your activity during those first two weeks, including reducing the potential of elevating your heart rate or increasing blood flow to your face. For example, you should not bend over or do any exercise beyond light walking, including any heavy lifting. If you have young children at home, you may need help with childcare in the first two weeks.

You should be able to resume normal activities and return to work within 2-3 weeks. However, you will need to wait until Dr. Murthy clears you to resume strenuous exercise.
