An Eyelid Surgery From Dr. Namita Murthy

AGE AND FATIGUE

Have you looked in the mirror lately and wondered why you always seem to look as though you didn’t get enough sleep? No matter how many hours you get, it’s the same thing: puffy eyes, droopy eyelids, and bags. Eyelid Surgery from Annapolis, MD facial plastic surgery specialist, Dr. Namita Murthy can get rid of these signs of age and fatigue and restore a look of youthful vitality.

What Is BLEPHAROPLASTY?

ADDRESS AGING TISSUES

Blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery) is a procedure designed to address aging tissues around the eyes. Specifically, it is a form of eyelid surgery that aims to remove skin and reposition the crease of the upper eyelids and reduce the bagginess of the lower eyelids.

As you age, the skin starts to lose elasticity, causing it to sag above and below the eyes. This excess skin can begin to look wrinkly, which can negatively affect vision in some cases. Furthermore, the fat that cushions the eyes may begin to herniate and move into pockets of loose skin, giving the appearance of puffiness under the eye. Owing to sun exposure and squinting, crow’s feet on the outside corner of your eyes can also deepen as you age. Dr. Namita Murthy can use various styles of blepharoplasty to create a customized surgery plan to address your specific issues. She has more than a decade of experience as a facial plastic surgeon, and can help you identify potential treatment areas to revitalize your look.

Types of BLEPHAROPLASTY

THREE BASIC TYPES

There are three basic types of eyelid surgery procedures: Upper Blepharoplasty, Lower Blepharoplasty, and Combination Blepharoplasty.

Upper Blepharoplasty tackles droopiness, puffiness, and wrinkling of the upper eye that can make you look tired, older, and even lackluster in expression. Dr. Murthy will make tiny strategic incisions around the eyelid crease, remove excess skin and tissues, and reposition the crease at a more youthful position. Lower Blepharoplasty focuses beneath the eyes. Aging weakens the muscles under our eyes, making it possible for fat to protrude further as time passes. Heavy bags under the eyes build a prominent, exhausted, or weary look for others.

Lower Blepharoplasty works to create a smoother, more contoured look from the lower lash line down to the mid-face via small incisions that enable the transfer of fat deposits and correct loose skin.

Combination Blepharoplasty combines procedures to build a more proportional and youthful look above and below the eyes. Dr. Murthy can tighten and remove skin through microscopic incisions hidden in eye creases or lid lines, readjust fat deposits, and re-contour muscles for a more refreshed overall look.

Your BLEPHAROPLASTY
PROCEDURE

TYPICALLY TAKES ABOUT 2 HOURS

If both the upper and lower eyelids are treated, eyelid surgery typically takes about 2 hours. Dr. Murthy will typically use local anesthesia and oral sedation. However, if your operation is performed at a hospital or surgical center, you will most likely receive IV sedation.

If you receive both an upper and lower blepharoplasty, Dr. Murthy will likely operate first on the upper lids. Typically, the surgeon would cut into the natural lines of the eyelids. Your surgeon will remove the skin from the underlying tissue via these cuts, extracting the excess fat and skin (and muscle if indicated). Next, with very minimal stitches, the surgeon will close those wounds. To keep them moist, the doctor will probably put ointment in your eyes and cover them with cold compresses while you’re in the recovery room. You can have distorted vision from the ointment right after surgery and be sensitive to light. Your eyes can feel watery or dry.

Recovery From Blepharoplasty

Swelling and, sometimes, bruising are possible following blepharoplasty in Annapolis, MD, but you should feel comfortable resuming daily activities in 7-10 days. Dr. Murthy will offer you detailed instructions on wound care and recovery depending on your specific surgery. Ice packs and keeping your head elevated for at least the first night will also provide comfort during your initial recovery period. Expect to see your final results in about 6 weeks after your procedure.

Your Blepharoplasty Results

LAST UP TO SEVEN YEARS

After your eyelid surgery, you can expect your results to last up to seven years.

Surgery on the lower eyelid seldom has to be repeated. Of course, after the operation, the eyes will continue to age. If you are noticing your eyes begin to look tired again, Dr. Murthy will discuss other available options.
