What Is Rhinoplasty?

220,000 nose jobs performed every year

Rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as a "nose job”) is a procedure to correct the size, shape, and function of the nose. With approximately 220,000 nose jobs performed every year, it is the most common reconstructive surgery among the general population.

The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, ensuring there is no overnight stay. Whether you receive general or local anesthesia, you can expect to avoid experiencing any pain as the surgery is performed. Your doctor performs cuts within the nostrils and may even make cuts around the base of the nose in more complicated instances. To achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look, the surgeon then reshapes the inner bone and cartilage.

The FiveTypes of Rhinoplasty

five basic Rhinoplasty types

There are five basic Rhinoplasty types: Closed, Open, Septorhinoplasty, Rhino-tip plasty, and Non-surgical.

Closed Rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty is the most common form of rhinoplasty. All incisions are within the nose, so there are no external scars. The patient experiences reduced nasal tissue inflammation, less detectable scarring, shorter operating times, and quicker recovery.

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty involves incisions in the skin between your nostrils and under your nose. Your doctor raises the skin and reshapes the inside of the nasal cavity. The nose is then secured with tape and a splint to allow it to heal correctly. Recovery time is typically about a week.

Septorhinoplasty

Septorhinoplasty assists in correcting breathing problems and is especially helpful for those with a deviated septum. To remove any twisted sections, your surgeon can make an incision in the lining within your nose. Then the affected sections are raised off the bone and cartilage, placing them in a straight position to allow easy breathing.

Rhino-Tip Plasty

Rhino-tip Plasty surgery rearranges the cartilage in your nose, changing its overall shape. Most modifications are within the nose to prevent any scarring. Your surgeon can develop the best tip for your nose structure.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty

popular option

Non-surgical rhinoplasty options include injectable fillers. For those who need minimal improvements to their nose shape, this is a popular option.

Bear in mind that the filler will start dissolving over time and you will require further care. However, this can be an advantage if you want to change your nose but aren’t 100% sure about what changes you want. This “trial” approach lets you see how your new nose looks (for up to a year or more) before you take the plunge and perform a permanent surgical rhinoplasty.

Your Rhinoplasty Recovery

People usually wear a nasal splint for the first week after nasal surgery. It is normal to experience some swelling around the eyes and minor bleeding from the nose. You may see some improvement after a few days. However, this can last up to two weeks.

Expect a little swelling in your nose, but this will likely only be noticeable to you. In the next six months, the swelling will subside, revealing the final form of your nose. For three to six weeks after surgery, avoid strenuous exercise, with a return to your regular social routines in two to three weeks.

After Rhinoplasty, it can be up to a year before you see the procedure's final results. As you age, you might see normal changes in your nose that would occur due to the natural aging process. Other than that, your new appearance should be permanent. You can protect your new look with a sensible lifestyle, including sun protection

Rhinoplasty FAQs

PLASTIC SURGERY IN ANNAPOLIS, MD

What types of physical conditions can Rhinoplasty correct?

Rhinoplasty can address a wide range of cosmetic issues. You may have a bump on your nose you would like removed. Perhaps you want to change the size of your nose. Maybe you have a previous injury that has left your nose misshapen. These are just a few of the conditions a nose job can correct.

Is Rhinoplasty right for me?

If you are over the age of thirteen, in relatively good health, and do not smoke or drink in excess, you are a good candidate for Rhinoplasty.

Does insurance cover Rhinoplasty?

It depends. If you are having work done on your nose for purely cosmetic reasons, your insurance will likely not cover you. But, if the procedure addresses a medical issue, your health plan may subsidize the cost.

When you are confident, it shows. Not just in your behavior or your vibe, but in all you do.

If you are self-conscious about a particular area of your body, that shows as well. Imagine the freedom that comes with not worrying about your look when you make your way through life; the freedom of knowing you are putting your best self out there. That is the aesthetics of confidence.
